John 13:3-5 "Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, rose from supper, laid aside his garments, and girded himself with a towel. Then he poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which he was girded."
Jesus was facing death, yet he thought of others first. By washing his disciples' feet Jesus set an example of servanthood that we should remember and follow. This basin and towel represent the basin and towel used by Jesus, and they remind us to be humble like Christ.
Basin & Towel (Michael Card)
And the call is to community
The impoverished power that sets the soul free
In humility to make the vow
That day after day we must take up
The basin and the towel
In any ordinary place
On any ordinary day
The parable can live again
When one will kneel and one will yield
Our Saviour Servant must show us how
Through the will of the water
And the tenderness of the towel
And when the space between ourselves sometimes
Is more than the distance between the stars
Then the fragile bridge of the servants bow
Will show us how to take up
The basin and the towel
And the call is to community
The impoverished power that sets the soul free
In humility to make the vow
That day after day we must take up
The basin and the towel If someone has hurt or betrayed you, put your feet into the basin today. Let the One who washed the feet of Judas wash your feet. God will not ask you to do what He has not already done.
Are we also prepared to take up the towel and the basin? As we recall, his death and passion' are we prepared to offer our lives for the sake of his kingdom? Jesus said: "if I your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet; you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have set before you an example that you also should do as I have done to you." Will you join with me in this challenge?
